11.6.2008 — Yes We Did
The first episode of Maxine’s Midnight Mixtape featured a nice mix of songs celebrating the election of Barack Obama. I’m a political science major and I’d been following the election closely, so the conclusion of it all brought forth a feeling of emotion that I had to let loose through song.
My favorite track of the night by far was Jarell Perry’s a capella version of Yes We Can, found on one of the many Obama mixtapes that are floating around. Another fave of mine was Joyful, by Soulive featuring Dave Matthews Band.
The night’s featured poem was Tanka for the brother at the McCain/Palin Rally by Bassey Ikpi, a spoken word artist in the Washington, DC area, and the show ended with a cover of Change is Gonna Come performed by Gavin Degraw.
So, what did you think of the night’s mix? Any songs I should have added? How did you feel when you knew Barack Obama was going to be the next president of the United States?
